LEAF Wins 2016 AMA Gold Leader

Club Award

The Longmont Electric Aircraft Flyers has been accepted as an "Academy of Model Aeronautics Gold Leader Club". This is great news and very important to our club and our club’s status amongst other clubs.  In order to recognize the leadership of the best model clubs, the Academy has established the AMA Leader Club Awards. These awards can be earned by any AMA chartered club, by meeting certain standards of community service and activity.

There are three levels of AMA Leader Clubs: Bronze, Silver, and Gold. Once a club meets the minimum criteria, it qualifies for different levels based on performance.

AMA has established 6 goals (one goal can be waived) and nine electives to obtain Leader Club status. The ultimate recognition, the Gold level, requires that all goals be met and each goal must be documented. Through the hard work and dedication of many of our members, we have met the highest standards set forth by the Academy of Model Aeronautics. LEAFRC is proud to have been awarded with the 2016 Gold Leader Club Award and continues to strive to be one of the best clubs in the RC hobby.

.: About LEAF

Longmont Electric Aircraft Flyers (LEAF) came about by people in the community wanting to have a safe and legal place to fly in the local area. Now most communities do not allow you to flyRC airplanes and similar models in their local parks and community open land.  LEAF is a dedicated property that was setup with a runway, FPV drone and helicopter dedicated flying area, Pilot pit area, Sun shelter, Solar powered battery charging stations, restroom, vehicle parking and visitors area to safe flying RC airborne devices.  Over the past years the club has grown to be one of the largest RC flying clubs in the state of Colorado and becoming the only pure electric flying site in the state of Colorado.  The field is conveniently located just south east of Union Reservoir off County Road 26 entrance.

LEAF also support the rapidly growing sport of FPV racing by providing a full time field for FPV racing with a track for its members to practice racing and with the ability of its members to change the course easily to constantly challenge the fyler.  The FPV flying field is seperate from the airplane field, keeping everyone happy and safe.

The club meets monthly at either the Longmont Hobbytown store or the field during summer months.  Both at the field and these monthly meeting anyone interested in learning about the hobby can visit and any of the club members will be happy to answer your questions. To find when and where the next meeting is occurring, check the calendar.

As excitement and enthusiasmcontinues to grow around UAS, and the regulatory frameworkcontinues to take shape, more consumers are looking to buy UAS for personal use and more businesses are looking to use UAS too. These prospective operators want to fly, and flysafety, but many don’t realize that, just because you can buy a UAS, doesn’t mean you can fly it anywhere, or for any purpose. Know Before You Fly provides prospective users with the information and guidance they need to fly safely and responsibly.  Learn more about this, click here.
